Cosmo’s Story

Running around in the middle of the road in Riverside—a brown and white dog was scared, panicking and confused. He was darting in and out of the lanes and the side of the road. As I pulled the car to a stop alongside the road, he immediately ran over—tail between his legs, eager to jump right in my lap he was lethargic, dehydrated and shaking. —longing for safe place to rest. For 90 minutes I held him as he continued to shake during the car ride to the rescue. I realized he had motion sickness, as the poor puppy threw up multiple times. The vets confirmed he had no chip and after several weeks of trying to find his family with no luck, we knew that he was going to need a fur-ever home.

Cosmo was about 3 years old and had severe anxiety, trust and abandonment issues that required a ton of patience and attention. He soon became attached to me: when I would leave he would wait be the door not knowing what else to do with himself till I got home. As soon as he saw me he would suddenly light up: jumping up to get in my lap and kissing my face. I knew then that we were going to be his fur-ever home. He was the most affectionate, loving, protective, dedicated, energetic angel I have ever met. He had a one track mind—it was to be touching me and having my full attention every second of the day. Cosmo got to live life out to the fullest the next 8 years which was not enough!

The story of the always happy and confident puppy came to an abrupt end after a simple routine dental. No one was prepared for what would happen, and we want to share our story to educate all pet parents. In the end, he did not come out of the anesthesia and ended up in the ER. His poor little body shut down as he went into a diabetic coma, and ended up passing away within hours. Ultimately Cosmo had pancreatitis that we were completely unaware of, but had we taken a new blood test right before his dental it could have saved his life. Unfortunately we did not consider getting one because the vets did not suggest so. since he had a blood test the year prior and seemed perfectly healthy at 11 years old.

In honor of Cosmo, we are starting a program called the COSMO Project to give out vouchers for a free blood test and a wellness check. It is critical to always make sure your fur babies are clear to undergo procedures, as well as make sure they are in general good health since they cannot verbally communicate when they are feeling ill. If you are interested in getting a voucher or donating to the COSMO Project, please contact us. This project will be funded be funded 100% by donations from angels like you.

Rest in paradise Cosmo “Momo”, 2 years have passed and my heart is still bleeding. I still can not believe that he is gone. I have a picture of him on my phone case, canvas art on the wall, a stuffed animal I sleep with every night and pictures all over my house of him. It is not enough, will never be enough, it will never be the same!!! We All will always love you and cherish you and the sweet memories my Love!
